Three Quarter Million Bucks for the Nutrioso Fire Station! Published May 5, 2009 in the print edition of The Occasional Gazette Not a lot of us who live in Nutrioso have been going to the meetings for Nutrioso's Fire District. After all, we assumed that those matters were being taken care of by people who had knowledge concerning fire equipment and the interest of our community in their minds. At one point there were some folks passing around a petition about considering the needs of the Nutrioso Volunteer Fire Department. I think most, if not all, of us signed it. We got more than we bargained for! They used it as a mandate to pick our pockets and ruin our town! I admit that my recent update on what is happening with the Nutrioso Volunteer Fire Department has been a rude awakening. There are a couple nonfunctional fire trucks in town. I don't know if there is water in the water tank that was installed at the old school yard. But at some of the first meetings, which I did attend, there was talk of having a brush truck that could be filled up there and that that would serve our community well. There is no brush truck or any working fire truck. But, there is a $40 thousand dollar a year Fire Chief who has never worked in fire suppression and has no idea how to put out a fire. There is the Vernon Fire Chief who is being paid $1500 a month to tell our group what to do. AND there are plans of building a three quarter of a million dollar fire station which will be paid for by property taxes without our having a say if we want it or not. Oh, and there are plenty of plans for hiring firemen, EMTs, buying ambulances.... like Nutrioso is larger than Round Valley and has never had access to services. This is not a volunteer Fire Department and they never intended it to be. What A Crock of Elk Droppings! What this really is about is making Nutrioso change into a money making operation for certain individuals. They want to increase the property values so that it can be made into the next Greer. Plans for the Nutrioso Creek Lodge have been drawn up and would put a convenience store, gas station and motel smack in the middle of the Auger Canyon corner off the highway. Is this what we want Nutrioso to turn into? The hotels on the mountain don't fill up most of the time as it is. This would knock them hard. And a convenience store? Trash blowing across the meadow, drunks buying six-packs, campers dumping their waste into commercial septic tanks that can impact our wells... not to mention that it would turn that whole corner into a block of asphalt. I bet they can't build it unless Nutrioso has an “adequate” fire station. Let's look at who is to profit and where they stand on keeping Nutrioso a quiet, rural little town. Where is the money coming from now to pay the “Fire Chief” and the Vernon Fire Chief? That is over $3000 a month for our “Fire Chief” (plus benefits), and another $1500 for the guy from Vernon. Right now there is a Call for Bids out to build this fire station. They plan on doing this soon and the hundred or so homeowners up here will be the ones to pay for it. This is not a small matter folks! We need to address it NOW. The County Board of Supervisors are the only ones who can stop this fiasco! We need to descend upon them as a community and stop this runaway train! We don't have to accept it. The citizens made a change in the building of a bar and restaurant in Vernon. It didn't happen because they woke up and stopped the nonsense. What are WE going to do? Sit here and say what a nice place this used to be? [Editors Note: Hopefully we will receive a response to this from the NVFD with some facts that make sense. I will bring it to you here and in print when I have more on this issue.] |
